Thanksgivin'

Charlie Brown: We've got ANOTHER holiday to worry about. It seems Thanksgiving Day is upon us.
Sally Brown: I haven't even finished eating all of my Halloween candy.

Am I actually watching Click with my sister? Thanksgiving dinner in PA with family. Overhauled my desktop + icons. Did the Zoey Deschanel + M. Ward co-lab "She & Him" put me to sleep on the plane flight? Short and fragmented sentences are in. Happy Thanksgivin' y'all.

Apple TV: this time it's for real

Divx players could play DVDs, but they could also play Divx discs, which were promoted as a something between a rental and a true purchase. The discs themselves were cheap, and allowed for the viewing of the film in a 48 hour period once you started it. You could then unlock the disc permanently for an additional "purchase" fee that took into account what you had already paid. The strangest part about it was probably the modem - yes, a modem - that it used to manage its DRM. I don't think we were using the term DRM in 1998, but that's how we would have described it. Divx was at the center of the first real flamewar I had seen online, citing things privacy concerns and the limitations it placed on the consumption of media. I'm not sure it was ever going to work. The idea that you could never really own these discs was a strong point of contention, but even with a DVD (called "Open DVD" by advocates at the time) your ownership isn't exactly absolute.

It may be that some people are really excited by devices like the Apple TV, certainly the device has seen improvements, but whenever Steve Jobs starts talking about this thing I go instantly into a coma. The duration of this coma is exactly the length of time that he discusses it, and once he moves on to something that is useful or important I am rejuvenated. It is funny, or perhaps sad, but the almost universally reviled Divx format was actually more lenient than today's digital downloads. The partial, limited-use, occluded ownership of the iTunes model is now so engrained that these rentals can be worse than bad, and no one remembers.

MacBook Pro Update

I'm liking how it's turning out. New Thunderbird, Vienna (rss reader), Firefox, Safari, iChat, WoW, iPhoto icons and Download + Document Stack overlays. As well as a new icon for the Mac HD but i cant edit to "Untitled" partition that contains Windows Xp. I may down the road delete it and reformat in FAT32 so I can edit it or at least rename it sheesh. So far the MacBook Pro has been running like a dream. There have been a few hang ups in applications that brought forth the spinning beach ball of death. Yet unlike Windows its easy to force quit them and reopen. In XP Ive been forced to power down the system via the power button after waiting 5 mins for a frozen application to "End Now". I had a few issues with replacing icons but I think it was mostly in part to being unfamiliar with using PNG files and ICNS files. Luckily Apple includes a plethora of developer tools right on the Leopard install dvd. One of which converts image files into the appropriate sized icon files. And finally there was one instance where I logged out and the cursor locked up, it may have been my Logitech mouse or any number of other things, but a quick press of the power button and a hit of the enter key and I was rebooted and everything was working again.
Off to work.

MBP Takes Over My Life, Okay With It

Yeah I like to multi-task (and look at myself apparently) so what; wanna fight about it? I've been on my new Macbook Pro for 25 of the past 31 hours (or so).

Boot camp set up with Windows XP installed on a separate partition. Which I really should have made a little bit larger. But now I can play HL2, and STALKER and soon Oblivion.

Leopard is amazing. It's beautifully put together and a breeze to work with. I have all my essential apps installed and I'm still tweaking some settings to my liking. A standing applause to Apple for their most recent vision of what an OS should be.

In search of a new computer.

I'll take a 15" please, thanks.

So after reformatting my hard drive and loosing the cd's with the drivers to get my Dell back up to date I realized why I love Apple so much again. True... it may be near impossible to upgrade your Mac beyond a new hard drive or memory because Apple controls the drivers in their OS updates/releases, but is that really such a big deal? If you want to control your components and upgrade every 6 months when the next evolution or chipset comes out, then build your own computer... (its cheaper anyway).

Don't get me wrong I've loved every PC I've owned, it's just time to move onto something I don't have to worry about all the time.

PS. chris get me that discount bitch.

EDIT: It's up and running, thanks to finding the drivers online on my PowerBook and burning the exe's to cd. Still want that MBP :)

How do I music?

Yes please, give me 2. One to listen, and one to masturbate to.

Okay, I'm going to take this time to explain that I am/am not an "Apple Fanboy". I am a fan of Apple and their products, but I am by no means a fanboy. I used to be very one sided and swore to never touch an Apple product. I think like a lot of other people I started to take more notice, and interest in Apple when they started releasing their iPods. I remember having a really old and shitty Sony mp3 Walkman thing. It was fucking horrible... looking back on it and the iPod is about 1289307139187x better. And yes I do believe the iPod is a tad expensive and many can make concrete arguments of owning other mp3 players over the iPod. Yet there is something about it that has lured millions into purchasing one.

I must say, I am disappointed somewhat with Apples new iMac. I wanted to purchase one so much, and I kept looking for reasons to... but for me personally the video card they "upgraded" to from the previous generation is just pitiful. Rereading all that makes no sense to me so...

Cliffs:
New fake iPod pic someone made = sexy
Probably not real = makes me sad
I am not an Apple Fanboy

They're here...

So I've been following the rumors for the past month+. At first it seemed like only a far off hope. Then Apple announced an... announcement on the 7th just as the rumors had said. Soon images of possible new iMacs popped up everywhere on the internet. All of which ended up being fake... yet very sexy in their own ways. Until today when Apple released the new iMacs , a year after the last revision (i think its been a year); along with updates to .mac and iLife. At first I wasn't sure how I felt about the black border, but after seeing more official pictures and the specs I am looking forward to owning, and making love to one. If only Leopard would come out now I would buy one tomorrow.

5am edit: After looking at more videos and pictures I'm slowly starting to like the new iMacs. There is still something about them that upsets me esthetically. Apple knows how to write software, they know how to build computers and more importantly they know how to make it all look good. Did you know the dimensions of the iPod are pretty damn close to the golden ratio? Yet with this newest incarnation of their consumer flagship computer the iMac, they seemed to have fumbled if only slightly. Tomorrow I will go and check one out in person, but from all the pictures Ive seen I'm going to say I can make an educated assessment of the iMac, from a visual stand point.

Visually the brushed aluminum of the past Powerbooks (i own one and its pretty), Macbook Pros, Cinema displays, Mac Mini and Mac Pros is very appealing to the eye. It gives a clean, upscale not plasticy and therefore cheap look. And it holds up to scratches... dents are another thing. Regardless Apple hit it big with wrapping their computers in good old AI [aluminum]. And they almost got it right again with the new iMacs. But what in gods name were they thinking with that black border around the monitor? Ive heard people saying it gives a little bit of "pop" to the screen, which I can understand. With the Mac Mini the mixture of white plastic and aluminum seemed to have worked. The white didn't contrast with the gray of the aluminum as the black does so strikingly with the new iMacs. Or maybe it's just the ratio of aluminum to black plastic that makes it slightly less appealing. The behind of the new iMac is prettier than its facade. With a larger ratio of black to the silver lining of aluminum around the border, a bold clean look is presented in the back. I feel if Apple would just pull down the black to cover the silver chin of the iMac it would look more 10x more appealing. We will just have to see how consumers approach this glass and aluminum generation of iMacs.
